Everyone arrived at the airport on time, 4:00 AM, and we were getting all checked in with no issues. Some people were tired, and some were ready to go snorkeling! Beautiful weather and a beautiful sunrise, couldn’t ask for a much better day to fly. After boarding the plane, we departed Burlington around 6:05 AM. The flight took us 40 minutes to Newark, New Jersey, where we had a 2 and a half hour layover. We got a little bored and bought some UNO to play. We started to get really excited when it was time to board our plane to Bermuda around 9:40, we were so close!. No delays, perfectly on time, we even arrived in Bermuda 20 minutes early! Everyone was excited to get off the plane and get into the warm, crystal clear waters.
After we all arrived at BIOS, we got a mini tour with some ground rules of the facility, then we all got our keys and went up to our rooms to get ready for our dive. Once everyone had arrived and suited up, we started the 30 minute trek to Whalebone Bay. On the way, we saw many different types of plants along with a party boat going by! Once we got there, we did a small swim test, making sure everyone could stay afloat for 5+ minutes and swim at least 150 meters. After that, we got our data boards and cameras and started to swim while taking data on the fish we saw. At the end, we all grouped back up on shore, got all of our gear off, and started to walk back to BIOS. We saw some parrot fish, a sand diver, squids, a hogfish, a bunch of damsel and surgeon fish, along with some butterflyfish.
After we walked back from the snorkel, we went straight to dinner. There were a variety of options, from beef stew, rice, chicken, noodles, boiled veggies, and salads! After dinner in the classroom, we reviewed our day. We went over our current assignment requirements, which is recording information about the snorkel site, detailing, and researching the species we saw. We checked the data recorded while snorkeling, both from identifying fish in the moment and identifying in the classroom based on pictures we took, and submitted our first collection to REEF! We ended the class with an overview of the plan for tomorrow, and went to get sleep after our long day!
